Shining Our Light from Within

“We arrive at a consciousness of Unity only in such degree as we see that what we are looking FOR, we are looking WITH, and looking AT.”
— Ernest Holmes, Science of Mind, p. 124

Fall always feels like an invitation to turn inward. As the light softens and the air cools, something within us calls to slow down and listen. This month I’ve been exploring what it means to “Glow Up”—not in the social-media sense of outer transformation, but as an inner illumination that comes from aligning with Truth and letting Love do its quiet, radiant work.

When we align with Truth, it changes everything. It changes how we move through our days, how we see one another, how we understand the world. I’m not talking about personal opinions or religious dogma, but the kind of truth that shines so brightly you can feel it—clear, compassionate, and luminous— enough that you can see through to the heart of person; even someone who doesn’t share your point of view. Like the sun that shines on all life, Spirit makes Itself known in ways we can recognize when we pause and look within.

Window Washing for the Soul

Recently, someone gifted me a literal window-washing. Oh my gosh—my windows were so dirty! As I watched the water run clear, I laughed at the simple joy of watching the generosity of my friend wash my windows. It struck me as the perfect metaphor for spiritual practice.

Prayer, meditation, journaling, taking spiritual development classes—these are the ways we keep the windows of our awareness clear. Not to peer outward at the world, but to tend to what we’re looking through. Life’s storms can leave a lot of muck on our metaphorical windows, clouding how we interpret the world around us. But when we care for our consciousness, we begin to see that the light was never gone—it was just obscured.

Transparent Souls

When I first discovered Science of Mind, I was drawn to people who seemed transparent. They weren’t perfect, but they were authentic—vulnerable, humble, and full of light. Twenty-five years later, that same light continues to draw me in. I see it filtering through the humanity of the people around me—the “sunlight of the Spirit” shining through ordinary lives.

It’s what I call inner illumination—that quiet glow that radiates when we’re clear inside. When we do our spiritual window cleaning, we start to see that light everywhere. As the saying goes, “You spot it, you got it.” Whatever we recognize in others—beauty or shadow—mirrors what’s alive in us.

Reclaiming Our Light

The world tells us to look outward for answers—to fix, to buy, to achieve. But real power doesn’t come from external sources; it comes from the Light within. When we give our attention only to the world outside, we end up paying “spiritual utility bills” to something that can never sustain us. Richard Rohr says, “If we don’t mythologize our pain (or challenges), we pathologize it.” In other words, when we forget that our struggles are sacred invitations, we start believing they’re signs of something wrong with us.

My invitation today is simple: See everything as a pathway to clarity. Let every challenge become an opening to deeper seeing. Wash your spiritual windows often, and watch how differently you feel about the world as you reveal your own inner illumination.

Namaste, friends.
The light in me truly sees the light in you.
May we all keep our windows clear enough to let it shine.
