“The Short Walk From Chaos to Calm”

A child is bracing for a needle stick. A teenager on the psych unit has not spoken all morning. A dialysis patient has three more hours in the chair. In each of these rooms, something shifts when the first note lands.

The walk from chaos to calm is shorter than most of us believe. It happens in a breath, a shared rhythm, a song a child helps write from her own hospital bed.

For over twenty years in the Healing Arts department at Rady Children’s Hospital, Karl Anthony has brought guitar, voice, and steel handpan to bedsides, pain clinics, hematology and oncology, eating disorder and dialysis units, and to drum circles where patients learn to quiet the mind by listening to each other. He also leads annual service travel trips to Chiang Mai, Thailand, where the same music opens doors at an orphanage, a disability center, a village school, and an elephant sanctuary, with no shared language required.

He shares what he has witnessed about our capacity to move from chaos to calm, and the simple practices that make that walk available to anyone.
