The Time Is Now and We Are the Ones to Do It!

Dr. Heather Dawn Clark

Dear Ones,

In July I was blessed to attend the World Parliament of Religions, the theme of which was Pathways to Peace: the Wisdom of Listening, the Power of Commitment. The Parliament was held in Barcelona, Spain, and hosted between five and seven thousand people from every faith. The most exciting sessions I attended were ones that urged people to be responsible for their own thinking and behavior; these sessions declared that consciousness is creative. Some of these sessions were presented by leaders of various faiths, but what was most encouraging were those presented by philosophers, physicists, activists, attorneys and anthropologists.

One of the ideas that most appealed to me was the idea that in order for us to experience global peace, we needed to understand our own worldview and to be able to rise above our own prejudices to listen with understanding to another person's point of view which is different from our own. The worldview that most of our culture embraces is a model of dominance and control. This comes from a belief that the stronger person, community or country should control the smaller, weaker people, communities or countries. In this model, we need to amass visible symbols of strength such as a large, mighty military in order to protect ourselves and control our enemies. This has led us as a global community to be sitting upon weapons that could literally end life as we know it.

Upon returning home from the Parliament, one of the first things that I was called to do was to officiate a funeral service for a young woman, a victim of domestic violence. Domestic violence is built on the same unworkable model of domination and control that brings wars to nations great or small.

Meanwhile, our planet has grown smaller. Communication is immediate and we see more similarities than differences with our brothers and sisters from other cultures and religions.

We do not need to live lives based on intimidation and fear. We simply need to change our minds about the nature of life. What if we lived from a realization that we are all connected? I believe this is true. We are one, spiritually. But even if we don't accept that as true, we are one global village. What we do to one of our sisters or brothers we do to ourselves. What if we viewed the entire universe as a friendly place to live, perfectly designed for each of us to live peace-filled, happy and prosperous lives? What if we realized that the first necessary step is for each of us to recognize that our thoughts create our experiences? What if we changed our minds and decided to live as one?

Each one of us can be a difference-maker right now. We simply need to embrace another world-view, one of personal responsibility and cooperation. Dr. Ernest Holmes said, "Give me a thousand people who are for something and against nothing, and I will change the world." We are that thousand people. The time is now and we are the ones to do it.

Love,
Heather
